There are a lot of simple precautions that you can take in order to ensure that you and your family remain as safe as possible if a hurricane should approach or make actual landfall at your home. One of the biggest problems that typically comes along with hurricane season is a lot of water. Homeowners should make sure to drain their pool as much as possible, but not too much. You can talk to your swimming pool provider to learn the best way to drain your pool and what the proper level of water is.

Debris can also be a major issue due to the intense winds that are a part of the storm. This is with the storm itself or the bands, so preparing sooner than later is always recommended. Some things you cannot prevent, but by taking time to trim any extra tree limbs and branches in your yard you can prevent possible damage to your swimming pool, screen area (if you have), home and any equipment that you have exposed. Another form of debris can come from any pool toys, patio furniture or any other loose items that are in your yard area. Make sure to store all of these items so that they do not have the potential to become flying projectiles in case a storm was to come. If you have no where to store these items and you have a concrete pool, then gently place them in the pool to help shield them from the winds.

If a storm is approaching, then there are additional precautions to take. First off, make sure that all of your electrical power is shut off at the circuit breakers. Again, we remind you to never completely empty your pool. Pools that have been emptied may experience serious structural problems and could even be lifted off their foundations.
